Motorola DP1400 Analogue Vs. DP1400 Digital

Motorola DP1400How confusing is this… The Motorola DP1400 is available in two different flavours – Analogue Only and Digital Version.

So what’s the difference?

The Motorola DP1400 analogue version is a digital radio with the digital chip disabled by default. To make the digital chip work, you need to purchase a “digital mode activation licence key” from Motorola. The digital version of the Motorola DP1400 is, put simply, the same radio with with the digital mode activation licence key pre-installed, and hence the digital chip switched on.

Note: All Motorola digital radios will also work in analogue mode for backward compatibility.

As you can see from this Model Table, you can buy the DP1400 as an analogue-only radio or as a digital radio as standard.

How Can An Analogue DP1400 be Upgraded to Digital?

This is easy to do. You’ll need to buy HKVN4204Adigital mode activation licence key“, one per radio, which you can buy from Radiotronics. You can either buy a programming lead and CPS software and install the licence yourself, or ask our in-house engineer to do it for you (fee applies). However, this is the pricey option – as it can cost up to £70 per radio for theHKVN4204A licence key. It’s cheaper to buy the Motorola DP1400 as a digital radio in the first place.

Should I Buy An Analogue Only DP1400?

This depends. If you already have a number of CP040 or GP340 radios which you want your new DP1400 radios to work with and you have no interest in migrating to digital, then there’s no need to have digital radios.

However, if you will want to migrate to digital any time soon we recommend the digital version. The price difference between the Motorola DP1400 Analogue Only and Motorola DP1400 Digital Version is not as much as the HKVN4204A upgrade licence key.

PMR446 Frequencies

PMR446 is the EU band for licence free low power two way radio use.

There are 8 frequencies  allocated for analogue radios, 16 frequencies for dPMR digital radios and 8 frequencies allocated for DMR digital radios.

Licence Free channels are only to be used on licence free certified radios. These usually have a fixed antenna but only put out 500mW (0.5W) of power.

We have two sections on our website for licence free two way radios:

It is illegal to program and use high power business radios on PMR446 channels unless you can find a way to restrict their power to 500mW. There is currently no high power business radio that can be restricted to less than 1W – therefore no professional grade high power business radios that can be legally programmed to operate on PMR446 channels.

PMR446 Analogue Channels

There are 8 allocated PMR446 analogue licence free channels. They are to be used with 12.5 kHz spacing when programming your radio.

If your radio supports CTCSS or DCS codes, you can utilise CTCSS or DCS codes to reduce the chances of interference. Using CTCSS / DCS codes do not stop other radios user from hearing you, but they will stop you from hearing unwanted interference and other radio users who do not have the same CTCSS or DCS code. CTCSS and DCS are not privacy, they’re just useful for blocking out interference.

Motorola GP340Ex (ATEX) Battery & Charger Guide

Motorola GP340ExThe Motorola GP340Ex is a different radio to the standard Motorola GP340. GP340Ex is an ATEX-rated two way radio which can be used in potentially hazardous areas such as gas plants.

The picture we show here is of the latest iteration of the GP340Ex which is blue. The predecessor was black. There is a difference. The black version must be used in an ATEX-rated leather case and sling. This is not the case for the blue version.

Most ATEX radios are restricted in output power and have special ATEX-rated batteries and the GP340-Ex is no different.

Current Motorola GP340Ex Battery

There is only one battery for the GP340-Ex. The order code is NNTN5510DR.

Previous GP340Ex Batteries

Previous iterations of this battery are NNTN5510AR, NNTN5510BR and NNTN5510CR. However, the NNTN5510DR is a direct replacement for all of these previous batteries.

Motorola GP340Ex Chargers

Whilst the Motorola GP340Ex has it’s own battery, it does share the same chargers.
